Doormats are the first defence line. They collect dust, mud and tiny stones from shoes. But if you never shake them out, they become saturated. Then every time someone wipes their feet, they’re just redistributing old dirt back onto shoes.
Taking mats outside and giving them a good shake or beat every few days empties them. They can then do their job properly again, instead of becoming little dust reservoirs.
Cleaner mats mean less dirt crossing the threshold, which means less sweeping and mopping inside.
